Light travels at a speed which is about a million times faster than the speed of sound. In one second, light travels about 300,000 km, but sound travels only 334 m. You can get some ideas of this difference by watching the start of a race.

If you stand some distance away from the starter, you can see smoke from his gun before the sound reaches your ears. This great speed of light produces some strange facts. Sunlight takes about 8 minutes to reach us. If you look at the light of the moon tonight, remember that the light left the moon 1.3 seconds before it reached you. The nearest star in your eyes is very far away. It's light tonight started to travel towards you four years ago at a speed of nearly 20 million km a minute. If we want to be honest, we can't say, "The star is shining(光亮) tonight." We have to say, "The star looks very beautiful. It was shining four years ago but its light has only just reached the earth."

56. Sound travels at a speed which is _____ than the speed of light.

  C. sound travels much faster than light

  D. your eyes are much better than your ears

58. Sunlight has to go about _____ before it reaches us

  A. on the earth                          B. away from that star                          C. away from the sun                                     D. on the moon

B

The easy way out isn’t always easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug, my husband of one month, to a special meal. I glanced through my cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing making the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as Doug left for work. As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Doug loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky dough (面团) covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn’t have to face Doug laughing at my work. I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the window to see what he was doing. Looking out, I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder. Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast (酵母) made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. It looked like some unknown being from outer space. I could see why Doug was so shaken. I had to admit what the ‘living thing’ was and why it was there. I don’t know who was more embarrassed (尴尬) by the whole thing --- Doug or me.

60. The writer’s purpose in writing this story is _____.

C. to describe the trouble facing a newly married woman

D. to explain the difficulty of learning to cook from books

61. Why did the woman’s attempt at making the bread turn out to be unsuccessful?

A. The canned orange had gone bad.                        B. She didn’t use the right kind of flour.

C. The cookbook was hard to understand.                        D. She did not follow the directions closely.

62. Why did the woman put the dough in the rubbish bin?

A. She didn’t see the use of keeping it.                        B. She meant to joke with her husband.

C. She didn’t want her husband to see it.      D. She hoped it would soon dry in the sun.

63. What made the dough in the bin look frightening?

A. The rising and falling movement.                        B. The strange-looking marks.

C. Its shape.                          D. Its size.

A rabbit is running into its hole. You will ask, “What has this to do with language?”

Well, when a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its tail moves up and down as it runs. The other rabbits see its tail moving up and down, and they run too. They know that there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal.

Many other animals use this kind of language. When a bee has found some food, it goes back to its home. It can’t tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.

Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for instance, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.

But human beings (人类) have something that no animal has ---a large number of words which have the meanings of things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other information, to tell or inform other people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can remember things that have happened, or send messages to people far away. No animals can do this. No animal has the wonderful power of language.

No one knows how man learned to make words. Somehow he learned to make them. As the centuries went by, he made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language.

73. The rabbit warns (警告) the other rabbits of danger by _____.

A. running away                                        B. making a sound

C. telling them                                                D. moving its tail up and down

74. When a bee does a little dance in the air, it is telling the other bees _____.

A. that there is danger                                      B. where they should hide

C. where the food is                                      D. where they should move
