Light travels at a speed which is about a million
times faster than the speed of sound. In one second, light
travels about 300,000 km, but sound travels only 334 m. You
can get some ideas of this difference by watching the start
of a race.
If you stand some distance away
from the starter, you can see smoke from his gun before the
sound reaches your ears. This great speed of light produces
some strange facts. Sunlight takes about 8 minutes to reach
us. If you look at the light of the moon tonight, remember
that the light left the moon 1.3 seconds before it reached
you. The nearest star in your eyes is very far away. It's
light tonight started to travel towards you four years ago
at a speed of nearly 20 million km a minute. If we want to
be honest, we can't say, "The star is shining(光亮) tonight." We have to say,
"The star looks very beautiful. It was shining four years
ago but its light has only just reached the earth."
56. Sound
travels at a speed which is _____ than the speed of light.
A. millions of times slowerB. about a million times slower
C. millions of times fasterD. about a million times faster

stand far away from a starter, you will see smoke from the
gun before you hear the sound, because _____.
A. the sound of the gun will reach you
before the fire
B. sound doesn't travel so fast as light
C. sound travels much faster than light
D. your eyes are much better than your
ears
58. Sunlight
has to go about _____ before it reaches us
A. 4 yearsB. 1.3 seconds C. 8 minutesD. 8 hours
59. The light
of the nearest star you see tonight has been _____ for four
years.
A.
on the earthB. away from that starC. away from the sun D. on the moon

The easy way out isn’t always easiest.
I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug, my husband
of one month, to a special meal. I glanced through my cookbook
and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing making
the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as Doug
left for work. As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought
if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled
everything. As Doug loved oranges, I also opened a can of
orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky
dough (面团) covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put
the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn’t have to
face Doug laughing at my work. I went on preparing the rest
of the meal, and, when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish
chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed.
Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard
a noise. The third time he left, I went to the window to see
what he was doing. Looking out, I saw Doug standing about
three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a
stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the
house, he dropped the stick again, he held the lid up enough
for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked
harder. Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused
the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast (酵母) made the surface shake and sigh
as though it were breathing. It looked like some unknown being
from outer space. I could see why Doug was so shaken. I had
to admit what the ‘living thing’ was and why it was there.
I don’t know who was more embarrassed (尴尬) by the whole thing --- Doug or
me.

Pop music is the name for different
forms of popular, commercial (商业的) music. It had its beginning in the United
States of America and spread (传播) through the whole world during the 1950s and 60s. It is widely liked by
the young people. The best-known early form of pop music was
"rock 'n' roll"; another was "blues".
A more recent development is "folk-rock". Pop music
has taken the place of (取代) native music in many parts of
the world; it has caused the number of people for jazz to
become much smaller than it was in the 1950s and earlier,
and it has now begun to rule (统治) musical stage productions. It's
a big industry. Much pop music is without artistic value (艺术价值), but the work of some pop singers,
e.g. the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the groups like Pink Floyd and
Crosby, Stills and Nash, is on a higher musical level (水平). And there is still a great interest in it

For a long time scientists have been wondering
whether there is life on other planets besides the earth.
They have found very little evidence to support this
theory. Not long ago, some pieces of rock from outer space
were discovered in Australia. This discovery has excited experts
throughout the world because these pieces of rock contain
chemicals similar(相似的) to those found on the earth and
in our own bodies. This shows that life, in some form, is
not only possible but probable on other planets.
70. The underlined
words "little evidence" mean _________. A. little
news B. small pieces of rock C. few signsD. little information
71. The discovery
in Australia makes scientists believe that _______. A. there

probably exists on other planets C. on
other planets there are probably the same living things as
on the earth D. the
form of life on other planets is possibly the same as that

A rabbit is running into its hole. You will
ask, “What has this to do with language?”
Well, when
a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its tail
moves up and down as it runs. The other rabbits see its tail
moving up and down, and they run too. They know that there
is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making
a sound. It has given them a signal.
Many other animals use this kind of language.
When a bee has found some food, it goes back to its home.
It can’t tell the other bees where the food is by speaking
to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells
the bees where the food is.
Some animals say things by making sounds. A
dog barks, for instance, when a stranger comes near. A cat
purrs when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds,
each with its own meaning.
But human beings (人类) have something that no animal
has ---a large number of words which have the meanings of
things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each
other information, to tell or inform other people what is
in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can remember
things that have happened, or send messages to people far
away. No animals can do this. No animal has the wonderful
power of language.
No one knows how man learned to make words.
Somehow he learned to make them. As the centuries went by,
he made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language.
73. The rabbit
warns (警告) the other rabbits of danger by
_____.
A. running awayB. making a sound
C. telling themD. moving its tail up and down
74. When
a bee does a little dance in the air, it is telling the other
bees _____.
A. that there is dangerB. where they should hide
C. where the food isD. where they should move
75. Some
animals, like the dog, the cat, and some birds say things
by _____.
